I have found that I enjoy adding the detail to a model more than any other stage but it is also the most time consuming. I don't mind at all. I'm enjoying it.
However, I need advice. How do I model the louvre windows in the church tower? I have tried sticking styrene strip straight onto the window backing (painted grey in the photo) but it just isn't working. Any suggestions gratefully received.
For the louvres would sheet styrene clapboard work? Evergreen make sheets in 6 different spacings.
ReplyDeleteThe workmanship is fantastic by the way!
This is such a beautiful model, Chas. I am looking forward to seeing how you paint it. I recall seeing a thread on RMWeb where BRealistic had made some superb vents for his engine shed utilising a jig. Failing that, I think I would approach it with two different thicknesses of card, stuck to a window blank at an angle and fettled for consistency by eye. Not easy. If I find that thread I will let you know.
ReplyDeletecheers,
Iain
Thank you Iain and Paul. I'll have an experiment with both ideas this week. I'm a bit apprehensive about painting it, Iain, as it could all go very wrong. I'm tempted just to spray it with white primer and pretend it's a cake.
ReplyDeleteI sprayed my current build with grey primer and my colleague thought it looked "beautiful - like a coal model" :)
DeleteI think this is an absolute masterpiece of modelling - very well done Chas.
Thanks very much Lee. I hope the finishing touches to the station building are progressing well.
DeleteChas you have raised the bar yet again, what a superb piece of modelling !
ReplyDeleteI used Evergreen clapboard as suggested by Paul for the louvres on my feed store and found the idea worked well.
Thank you Geoff and thanks very much for the tip.
DeleteI finally solved the louvre problem by adapting Paul's and your suggestion of clapboard. Actually I think it was Evergreen metal siding - I will check. The horizontal lines on the clapboard were just right for supporting angled styrene strips. I'll post a picture. Cheers.
You've done a great job of everything else you have painted! It will be magnificent.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the confidence boost Iain. We shall see!
DeleteHi Chas, well...wow! Youve raised the bar yet again. Next thing we know you'll be having Allan Downes for breakfast! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI agree about styrene - it's such a versatile and forgiving material, and your work is such a good illustration of the standards that can be achieved with it.
Thanks Mikkel. Don't know about having Allan Downes for breakfast. I reckon someone like that would have me for breakfast!
ReplyDeleteHello there, Just found your blog. My four-year-old son and I are beginners at this lark - he received his model railway last Christmas. We'll be enjoying looking at your site for inspiration as we put together our model.
ReplyDeleteHi there. That's wonderful. I hope you have a lot of fun and that it's the start of a lifelong interest for your little boy. If you haven't already, have a look at the brilliant work of the bloggers I follow. Now they really are inspirational. Best Wishes, Chas.
